Established in 2000 as the Komaki City Symphony Orchestra with the aim of “promoting and enhancing musical arts and culture.” It was renamed the Chubu Philharmonic Orchestra in 2007. Under the guidance of AKIYAMA Kazuyoshi (deceased January 2025) since its founding, it grew into a professional orchestra based in Komaki City. Operating under the slogan “A top-class orchestra rooted in the community,” it energetically holds concerts primarily in the Chubu region.
Committed to nurturing future musicians through music education, it offers concerts accessible to infants, ensemble concerts for kindergarteners, full orchestra performances for children and students, and band instruction by orchestra members. Through its touring project commissioned by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the orchestra visits elementary and junior high schools nationwide, performing classical masterpieces and school songs with orchestral sound, earning widespread acclaim. For its own concerts, it actively features promising soloists from the Chukyo region, supporting and nurturing local young musicians. Furthermore, as part of its social contribution activities, the orchestra invites welfare organizations to concerts and holds volunteer concerts at senior care facilities and hospitals. By providing more people with opportunities to enjoy classical music, it contributes to the realization of a more spiritually enriched society.
At its regular concerts, the orchestra performs a wide repertoire spanning classical to modern works. It earns high praise for its challenging and diverse programming, including cycles (series of concerts dedicated to a single composer) and premieres of new works, combined with its ensemble skills and passionate performances. Its recordings are available on Naxos Music Library and various music streaming services.
The orchestra has received awards including the Aichi Prefecture Arts and Culture Newcomer Award.
In June 2024, it was promoted to full membership in the Japan Orchestra Federation. Currently, IIMORI Norichika serves as Principal Guest Conductor, and TAKEMOTO Taizo as Conductor of the Chubu Film Sounds Orchestra.
