In 2 02 5, the Tokyo Philharmonic celebrates its 114th anniversary of Japanʼs first symphony orchestra. With about 160 musicians, Tokyo Phil performs both symphonies and operas regularly. Tokyo Phil is proud to have appointed Maestro CHUNG Myung-Whun, who has been conducting Tokyo Phil since 2001, as Honorary Music Director; Maestro Andrea BATTISTONI as Chief Conductor, Maestro Mikhail PLETNEV as Special Guest Conductor.
Tokyo Phil has established its world-class reputation through its subscription concert series, regular opera and ballet assignments at the New National Theatre, and a full, ever in-demand musical agenda around Japan and the world, including broadcasting with NHK Broadcasting Corporation, various educational programs, and tours abroad.
This includes concert tours in Korea and China with Maestro CHUNG Myung-Whun (2005), joint performances commemorating the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and South Korea (2015, 2025), and the Asia Orchestra Festival, where Tokyo Phil was invited to represent Japan (2013).
